Recently my social studies 11 teacher talked about Canada’s most famous stars in 1920’s. In 1920s, which is after the Great War I, people became relaxed and happy trying to forget about the dark days-war period-and more and more people looked on the entertaining things for themselves such as movies or songs.

As the demand of being joyful with watching movies, the number of actors and actresses increased. In this period, more than hundreds of movie stars were in “Hollywood” and Mary Pickford was one of them. Mary Pickford, who was apparent Canadian female, became so popular over the world with her nickname-the world’s sweetheart. Her career was very successful and some movies that she was on such as Her First Biscuits became so famous.

She was in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1892. Her two younger siblings, Jack and Lottie became actors as well. She started her career as an actress when she was only a teenager. In 1919, she finally got some real luck; she went to Broadway to act because the U.S. had more prosperous backgrounds for actors and actress at the period. In the year, she appeared in 51 films - almost one a week. Later, she decided to join “Hollywood.”

She was the first actress who earned more than one million dollars in a year; this shows how great and famous she was. Mary Pickford appeared in Coquette. In the movie, she cut her famous hair into “bob,” which was the popular hairstyle in 1920s. She won the Academy Award for Coquette and retired from acting in 1933.

When I first heard about Mary Pickford, I felt something special because not only she was the famous movie actress, but also she was a Canadian who made Canada so proud. Nowadays, U.S. has so many famous movie stars in Hollywood; however I know that there will be another Mary Pickford soon.
