Summer is around the corner and the school year is coming to an end. A lot of your friends are going to be doing different things this coming summer like travelling, going to camp, going to summer school, or staying in town and taking on a summer job to earn some spending money. If you have no plans this summer and you’ve decided that your wanting to find a summer job, then this article is for you!
From my own personal experiences, acquiring a job at any time of year can be exhausting and difficult. Hopefully these steps will make your job hunting experience a lot easier.
Most employers will start looking to hire for the summer months in the springtime (April – June). Even though you cannot start a full-time job till school is over, you can start searching in the spring time and just let the employer know when you can start working. Or you can always start working part-time in the springtime once you are done school you can change to full-time.
First, you need to figure out what industry you would like to work in (ex. retail, fast food, restaurants, sales, office). Once you’ve decided on the industry, the search begins. Employers now use the internet to post job openings. Here are a couple websites that I use when I am searching for jobs.
1. Craigslist.com – this website has job postings after job postings in every job industry you can think of.

2. Surrey Leader – local online newspapers is another good sources for job postings.

3. Guildford Mall Shopping Center – be sure to check out local mall websites, sometimes stores at the mall will post jobs on the mall website.

Before you start applying for a job, you need to make sure your resume is formatted correctly and is clear of spelling mistakes. Having an adult or someone at you school’s career center to look over your resume is a good idea.
There are three main ways employers will ask you to apply for a job, through email, in person, or by fax/phone. Applying for a job through email and fax is the easiest, you don’t have to meet anyone unless they are interested in interviewing you. Dropping off your resume in person can be uncomfortable because you have to go and impress someone that you don’t know. Be sure to dress in appropriate clothing, have a copy of your resume, and smile. When you drop off your resume in person, always ask to speak to the manager rather than dropping off your resume and leaving. If the manager is in and is available to talk with you, he or she will most likely ask you some questions. Answer the questions in a professional and confident manner. Make sure to shake the managers hand when you first meet them and when you are saying goodbye. Also, look at them when you are talking and try to avoid looking nervous or uncomfortable. The statements above also apply for going to an interview.
Apply to as many jobs as you can even the ones you think you wont get called for an interview for. You just never know and it doesn’t hurt to try. Thinking positive thoughts about the “job hunting” process will benefit you more than thinking “no one is going to hire me”.
Happy job hunting! If you have any tips on how to get a summer job just post a comment to this article.
