Summer 2008: Get the Look for Less
Ah, summer-finally, we can wear t-shirts and shorts without running the risk of hypothermia. Some of us are lucky enough to have a summer job, but even those of us who don't have the extra paycheck still want to look good. Don't worry, it's not going to take a $198.00 DKNY top to look scorching in the months to come!
This summer, in addition to the usual spaghetti straps and capris, clothing goes asymmetrical, romantic (frills and silky fabrics included), and nautical. Juicy Couture's take on the classic sailor outfit is refreshingly modern, but expensive, at $298.00, while American Eagle channels the same look at a less damaging $19.95.
Cascades of ruffles and frills make up the latest trends in shirts and tops, fitting in perfectly with summer's relaxed mood. Instead of paying a hefty $215.00 for a deep purple pleated top from Theory, take a look at Urban Behavior's flowing satin top in the same hue and style ($25.80).
As for shoes, t-strap sandals, nautical themed (again!) heels and flats, and gladiator-inspired footwear dominate summer fashion, in both metallic and neutral shades. In designer footwear, Enzo Angiolini offers up $59.90 gladiator-inspired sandals, and Valea Firenze stocks a pair of t-strap sandals at a hefty $180.00. For the rest of us who want economical choices, Payless ShoeSource's gladiator sandals sell at $17.99, and their nautical themed espadrilles retail at $19.99.
Spring's blinding colors move into summer fashion, offering bold splashes of color in everything from bright turquoise to shining pink. Wide selections of the most affordable and boldest items are available almost everywhere! The Garage has an excellent selection of vivid tops from $15.00-$20.00.
Jewellery remains whimsical, while handbags everywhere, from Marc Jacobs (‘Rana' lime green purse at $795.00) to Maxx New York (Bright orange patent purse at $168.00), to Forever 21 (with an affordable $23.80 equally orange tote bag), are the epitome of color.
For the guys, take a break from the usual dull shirts and casual shorts, and try something a little more colourful (think blue, orange, and Old Navy's vivid polos at $6.99!) and more creative (think prints, designs, and Old Navy's geometric print board shorts at $14.70).
So go out to the movies, eat ice cream, watch the clichéd sunset on the beach, and enjoy this summer's fashions without going broke.
