What Exactly is Yoga?
Whether it's for exercise or relaxation, yoga is always becoming increasingly popular. While yoga technically has eight different “limbs” or divisions, involving moral practice, mental state and so on, it is commonly seen as a non-strenuous practice of various poses. These poses or “asanas” help to stretch and balance out your body.
Popular Forms of Yoga
Hatha: a slow gentle form of yoga that is great for all skill levels. This is a great form to start out with to learn proper technique and placement. Also, since it is more on the gentle side, hatha is a good practice for relaxation.
Vinyasa or Flow Yoga: a practice that focuses on breath control and synchronization. You change poses during exhales or inhales, making it appear very smooth and fluid, which is why it is commonly referred to as flow yoga. There are many different styles of Vinyasa so many different skills levels will find a class that fits their abilities.
Ashtanga or Power Yoga: this is a heavily popular form of yoga. It can be quite athletic compared to other forms of yoga and focuses on standing poses and salutations.
Bikrams or Hot Yoga: a more rigorous or strenuous form. It is a series of 26 poses done in a room with high humidity and a high temperature. The high heat and humidity allows you to get a deeper stretch. While it is advertised as a good form for every skill level, I would suggests Bikrams to those who are either somewhat flexible, been previously practicing yoga, or are already physically fit.
