Lately, a trend to contribute to the preservation of our beautiful planet has taken over our way of life. People are changing their lifestyles to the "greener" side. "I am NOT a plastic bag" totes can be seen almost everywhere now and graphic t-shirts promoting to "save our mother earth" are in style. Even celebrities have been getting in on the action; pictures of Hayden Panettiere can be seen all over the media whether she's "saving the whales" or just simply using reusable shopping bags on supermarket trips. But did you know that even simply surfing the Internet can conserve energy?

No matter what we do on the Internet, whether it's Facebook, MSN, or MySpace, search engines are our best friend. Websites like Ask, Yahoo!, and the infamous Google, seem to have an answer for everything and anything. But Blackle.com, a search engine website created by Heap Media, not only gets you the 0.10 second results Google gets you, but it also reduces energy consumption "one search at a time". Just simply having a black background can save approximately 500,000 Watts hours! Google turned its signature simple white background into black during Earth Hour on March 29th, but if Blackle's white counterpart switched to a black background it would save up to 750 Megawatt hours a year!

But that's not all, for all you dedicated environmentalists, Blackle provides a page full of free or low-costing ways to do your part for our Earth, other than using its search engine; here are just some computer-friendly suggestions:
  • Instead of keeping your computer on standby, turn it off completely
  • Consider switching to a laptop, as they require less energy than desktops
  • If you're not going to be using your computer for a short period of time, turn off the monitor
  • Set your homepage to Blackle.com; doing this will save tons of energy as it adds up, so not only will you get Google-quality results, but you will be saving your planet as well.

Be a hero. Spread the word and the world will thank you.
