A Moment of Truth

Recently, I've heard numerous people around school talking about the reality TV show "A Moment of Truth". It has a simple concept - simply tell the truth for the entirety of the show and you'll go home with a half million dollars.

The contestants are hooked up to lie-detection software as they answer 21 personal questions, deeply personal questions that you have never wanted to answer. Not only are you revealing the answers in front of the live audience but also in front of spouses and other close family members.

As I watched the contestant give her answers, I was squirming in my seat. I tuned in half way through the program so the questions where getting quite intense. For this newly-wed young woman there where questions like "have you ever cheated on your husband?", "if given the chance, would you get back together with your ex-fiancé?", and "on your wedding day, where you fully in love with your husband?” She looked panic stricken knowing that if she lies with any of her responses she'll not only lose her earnings but may also lose her husband. There is, however, the option to back out at any time but that doesn’t mean the answers aren’t up for discussion after the show.

Did the recent Writers’ Guild of America strike leave us in such despair for TV programming that we’ve resorted to watching relationships and families being torn apart in moments of perfidious greed? I simply can’t go for more than ten minutes watching this show. I feel bad that I am witnessing people voluntarily put themselves though this just for money. “A Moment of Truth” isn’t a show I’d suggest but if you want to check it out for yourself it airs Wednesdays at 8pm on FOX.
