Smile Again

The crowds gathered and people pushed and shoved,

Just to see one used car salesman, an orphan whom no one loved,

And a lady of nobility.

Is this who the contestants would be?

A man spoke as he stepped from the mob,

“People I have made this my job,

I must find the most beautiful thing in the world.”

The lady said, “There’s a prize I am told.”

“Of course, of course, but it depends. Do you have the most beautiful thing?”

“Surely, the most beautiful thing is my precious diamond ring!”

“Ugh,” he said, and his gaze did not linger.

“It would not be this jewelry that wraps ‘round your finger.”

Grinning, the car salesman spoke up,

“Look here, my dear man, at my brand new truck,

Beauty that comes with its very own cup holder!”

The man said, “This proves to me that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

Lastly, the man turned to the child.

“Well, do you have something?” he smiled.

“There!” the boy pointed at the man.

“Where?” the flustered crowd began.

“Right there! Just now!”

The man’s confusion etched his brow.

“Here! I’ll show you!” said the child.

Then he pointed to himself, and smiled.

The man laughed, “It’s seems I’ve been a fool.”

“Thank you, child. A smile’s brighter than any jewel.

Everyone has one, young or old, poor or wealthy,

Short or tall, sick or healthy.”

The crowd murmured and stirred,

Where was the gift of which they had heard?

The man asked, “What would your prize be then?”

The boy’s awnser was simple, “Smile again.”
